MSW98UI — chrome font (taskbar, menubar, title bars, Win98 window frame) ======================================================================== Upstream -------- Repository: https://github.com/MARTYR-X-LTD/ms-w98-ui Commit pin: 1333c17aa54f547025679ea05a37eee5a2a26429 (2023-01-30) Files vendored: - Website/public/fonts/MSW98UI-Regular.woff2 (subsetted via Website/scripts/build-font-subset.sh) - Website/public/fonts/MSW98UI-Bold.woff2 (subsetted via the same script) Authorship lineage ------------------ The MSW98UI typeface descends from Microsoft's "MS Sans Serif" UI face (the default Windows 3.1 / 95 / 98 / ME chrome font, copyright Microsoft Corporation). Modern OTF/TTF conversion by Lev Leontev (see https://stackoverflow.com/a/54023769); hinting and rendering fixes by martyr— (the MARTYR-X-LTD organization on GitHub). Glyph data is a faithful pixel-art reconstruction, not a fresh design. License posture (LicenseRef-martyr-x-ltd-ms-w98-ui-free) -------------------------------------------------------- The upstream repository ships **no LICENSE file**. The README states only: "The release is free and credits to all the contributors behind the work been done for each font." This is a permissive intent statement, not a formal SPDX-recognized grant. Vendored under a documented `LicenseRef-martyr-x-ltd-ms-w98-ui-free` identifier, mirroring the same posture used by adjacent Win98-revival projects in the ecosystem (e.g. justinthevoid/euclid). The underlying glyph shapes still derive from Microsoft's typographic work; this redistribution makes no claim of independent copyright over the glyph forms. If you are a downstream redistributor, a rights-holder (including Microsoft, MARTYR-X-LTD, or Lev Leontev), or otherwise have standing to object to this redistribution, please reach out via the project's support channel surfaced from `/credits` and we will pull or relicense the asset as appropriate. Replacement guidance -------------------- A drop-in OFL alternative exists at W95FA (Alina Sava, SIL OFL 1.1, https://fontsarena.com/w95fa-by-alina-sava/). Metrics diverge from MSW98UI noticeably enough that the swap was reverted on visual review. If a future legal complaint forces a swap, the W95FA path is the documented fallback.
